This was done as a gift for a friend who gave me a computer when I was totally broke and couldnt contact any new galleries.
The character isnt very original. I referenced heavily something I found online yrs ago. But the artists name is long lost in a dead computer. He was pleased as punch, and had asked me to include the word "Harmony" in Hiragana. But it turns out the character I chose actually says "American Man". I havent told him that.

You have more of this stuff? It'll go down a storm here on dA!

A weekend is really good! It would take me that long to do that scroll/wall-hanging in the background! And It still wouldn't look that good. I still cant believe that lilly-pad painting of yours took you only 12 hours or so! -I know Art shouldn't be a race against time but I'm always amazed by artists who can achieve so much so soon!

Hmm.. when you say 12 hours for Breath it doesnt seem right, but then, in sections and over 3 or 4 days. I might take a series of pics of the one Im working on so you can see what I mean. It'll make more sense then

Nice one! I hate asking people to do a step-by-step like that because it kinda feels like I'm asking them to expose their time-honed secrets of the trade!

Dying to see it!

Beutiful work Greg! You've nailed this style perfectly. The character is awesome but it's the authentic setting and little details that pull it all together. How long, how big, what paint etc?

Acrylic. 3'x 4'. Um.. I dunno. A weekend? But all weekend.
I spent much of the nineties exhibiting in Japan, so I had already collected a bunch of nic naks and books on Edo period art and such. I should load some other stuff. I usually only do japanese style things for presents for people whove been amazing friends etc but I havent ever exhibited any of it.

I have some gorgeous books on Japanese art/ traditional dress/pottery etc. The details on that cabinet are straight from a writing box design. Most of it is Edo.
Im just scanning in another one. Hang on a sec.

I have some prints from a friend.....He didn't like them...and they were done specially for him,,,,One was a Hiroshige...a woodblock landscape called"Under the Nettle Tree"It came with the written folklore story!!!...and he had a full set of prints!....It's Edo...I think!

cheers Harry. Yeah not my usual thing, but I loved doing it. In fact I might have a week off sometime soon and have another redux into acrylic.
